A: UF focuses on concentrating a product by removing water and smaller molecules, while DF focuses on purifying the product by washing it with a new buffer to exchange the surrounding liquid.

A: An Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane typically lasts anywhere from 3 to 10 years depending on the quality of the source water, how frequently the membrane is backwashed, and the material type. Residential point-of-use systems usually require replacement every 2 to 5 years, while well-maintained commercial systems can exceed 5 years.

Q: How to increase ultrafiltration in peritoneal dialysis?

A: Ultrafiltration can be increased by increasing the amount of dextrose in the PD solution. PD solutions are available with 3 different amounts of dextrose: 1.5%, 2.5%, and 4.25%.
