Application Areas Of Hollow Fiber Membrane Modules

Dec 05, 2025|

In water treatment applications, 95% of microfiltration and ultrafiltration devices utilize hollow fiber membrane modules.

Hollow fiber membrane modules are primarily used for advanced wastewater treatment and reuse, drinking water purification, groundwater and surface water purification, and as pretreatment units in large-scale reverse osmosis systems. Their applications encompass municipal wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment and reuse, surface water purification for drinking water production, and providing high-quality pretreatment for seawater desalination reverse osmosis systems.

Hollow fiber membrane modules are widely used in membrane bioreactor (MBR) processes. Plate-type MBR modules offer advantages over hollow fiber modules, including lower transmembrane pressure differential, higher sludge concentration, lower pretreatment requirements, and lower maintenance and cleaning frequency. Hollow fiber MBR modules, on the other hand, offer advantages such as relatively higher packing density, smaller membrane tank footprint, and lower equipment investment.

Hollow fiber membrane modules are also used in pharmaceutical industry for pyrogen removal from purified water, and in liquid concentration, separation, and clarification processes in the biological, pharmaceutical, chemical, food, and beverage industries.

The non-powered submerged drinking water safety technology utilizes submerged hollow fiber membrane modules to achieve ultrafiltration through gravity siphon drive. The membrane system consumes zero electricity to produce water. This technology has been used in water plant renovations, such as in the Ningbo Taoyuan Water Plant.
